Town Government

The Town of Buckfield operates under the Town Meeting–Select Board–Town Manager form of government, a system that provides residents with a direct role in many of the Town’s most important decisions.

Town Meeting

Town Meeting is Buckfield’s legislative body. Registered voters have the authority to consider and vote on matters presented on the Town Meeting warrant, including the municipal budget, ordinances, and other matters requiring voter approval.

Town Meeting gives Buckfield residents a direct voice in determining the priorities and direction of their community.

Select Board

The Select Board is elected by the voters and serves as the Town’s executive and policy-making body. The Board establishes policies, provides direction on municipal matters, and oversees the Town Manager.

The Select Board acts collectively as a Board rather than individually in directing Town administration.

Town Manager

The Town Manager is appointed by the Select Board and serves as Buckfield’s Chief Administrative Officer.

The Town Manager is responsible for carrying out the policies and directives of the Select Board, overseeing municipal departments and employees, preparing and administering the municipal budget, and managing the day-to-day operations of Town government.

Under this structure, the voters establish priorities through Town Meeting, the Select Board provides policy direction, and the Town Manager manages the daily operations of the Town.

Together, these roles provide a system of local government that combines direct citizen participation, elected leadership, and professional municipal administration.

Town Boards and Committees

Boards and Committees play an important role in Town government by bringing residents, local knowledge, and community perspectives into the decision-making process. These volunteer groups assist the Select Board and Town staff by reviewing issues, developing recommendations, overseeing certain programs, and helping guide the Town’s future.

Serving on a board or committee is a great way for residents to become involved in their community and have a direct impact on local government. Residents interested in serving are encouraged to contact the Town Office for information about current vacancies and opportunities.
