  • Buckfield Broadband Project | Town of Buckfield

Buckfield Broadband Project The Buckfield Broadband Project started in 2020 through a partnership with Community Concepts. Due to the pandemic, work was put on hold until early 2022. A small group of volunteer residents has renewed the interest in ensuring every household has access to the internet. Our goal is to help make high-speed internet access available to all residents of the Town of Buckfield that are currently unserved (no internet access) or underserved (poor/slow internet access), at a cost that is affordable to you. As an example, in Oxford County, AT&T, Verizon and Charter/Spectrum have committed to offer all Affordable Connectivity Program-eligible (based on income) families at least one high-speed monthly plan (e.g., download speeds of at least 30 Mbps) for $30/month or less – some addresses have already been approved by the FCC for reduced rates. Spectrum has indicated that they will qualify eligible families for $17.99/month, plus an additional $5/month for a router – if needed – to broadcast a Wi-Fi signal to household devices. Additionally, we are working to reduce the cost to existing users while increasing internet speeds. Let's expand Maine broadband and make it affordable We want to ensure that adequate internet access is available to all residents - including students. We learned during the COVID pandemic that many students did not have the access needed to study at home with the closure of schools; we want to prevent this in future. Additionally, more and more employees are working from home and need state-of-the-art internet access. We are working to have Buckfield become more competitive in this area. The first step in the process is to determine what households are unserved and underserved. In order to do this, we need your help. If you currently have internet access, PLEASE TAKE THE SPEED TEST at either https://www.mainebroadbandcoalition.org/speedtesting-link OR https://www.speedtest.net/ then complete the QUESTIONAIRE . With the information that we collect (which will be treated CONFIDENTIALLY), we will be better able to determine the needs of the residents of Buckfield. TAKING THE SPEED TEST IS CRITICAL to help us determine the future need for the Town of Buckfield! (Please also complete the QUESTIONAIRE if you don’t have internet access.) We thank you in advance for your help with this phase of our project. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns you may have regarding internet access. We are here to help you!

  • Public Works | Town of Buckfield

Public Works Public Works Foreman: Preston Brickel Phone: (207) 576-9121 Email: buckfieldpw@gmail.com Public Works Garage: (207) 336-2526 The Public Works Department helps keep the Town of Buckfield moving every day. The crew has many responsibilities ranging from clearing our roads of ice and snow in the winter, providing grounds maintenance at all Town owned facilities year round, maintaining our cemeteries and our infrastructure by conducting road maintenance such as culvert replacements, ditching, and patching pot holes. The Road Commissioner works with the Road Committee to identify the most problematic roads in need of repair each year and compile the specifications needed to send out to bid for paving projects within the Town's approved paving budget. The Road Commissioner also monitors contractors progress and performance to ensure the services provided meet the requirements of the Town's paving contracts. NOTICE : The Town of Buckfield is responsible for the maintenance of culverts installed along local roads. For NEW culvert installations, landowners must file an Application for Driveway/Entrance Permit. Once approved, the landowner is responsible for the cost of the culvert and materials to install the first culvert. Public Works will not install a culvert in a driveway or entrance, until payment is received for the materials. Payment must be made at the Town Office. Culvert Placement Policy Local Roads - Application for Driveway/Entrance Permit State Roads - Driveway/Entrance Permit Application Mailbox Placement Mailbox Installations For convenience and practicality, mailbox installations have been allowed within the right-of-way of Maine’s roads; however it is important to recognize that such installations have two very important conditions: The mailbox is installed entirely at the owner’s risk. In other words, if the mailbox incurs damage during any sort of highway operations or maintenance, the property owner is not entitled to replacement or compensation. In fact, if the mailbox was not installed in accordance with the applicable standards as stated above, the owner may even be held liable for injuries or damages that may have been incurred as a result, and; The mailbox must be installed in accordance with applicable standards to ensure that mail can be delivered and that the mailbox does not create an obstacle or safety hazard to those that use or maintain the highway. Damage to Mailboxes This is a common problem and a source of much confusion. Each street has a public right of way (ROW); this ROW may extend 6 to 10 feet or more beyond the paved surface. In most cases people do not know this exists or they simply ignore the fact and plant or place objects in the ROW. Generally speaking, the Town is not responsible for any type of damage to any item including mailboxes located in this area. Residents should review their property records and become familiar with actual boundaries. Mailboxes should be placed as far back from the road as practical, set at a height of 42 in. and equipped with reflectors on all sides. It is also prudent to check posts for rot or deterioration, particularly at the base to insure they will not break under the weight of snow. Our plow drivers are warned to take all precautions to avoid striking mailboxes with the wing of the plow; however, the Town plows over 44 miles of roads through significant storm conditions and, occasionally, some damage is likely to happen. In the event your mailbox is damaged by a Town plow we ask you to make any needed repairs. The Town will not replace or reimburse for regular or custom made mailboxes, ornate posts or granite posts, etc., or existing mailboxes with rotted posts or in obvious poor existing condition. State of Maine law views mailboxes as an encroachment in the public way put there at the Owner's risk and municipalities are not legally liable for any damage or repairs to mailboxes due to plowing operations. • History | Town of Buckfield

About [BUK-field] is a town in Oxford County, incorporated on March 16, 1793 from Bucktown Plantation, also known as Plantation Number 5. According to the Town Report of 1977, the first settlers were Nathaniel Buck, presumably the town’s namesake, Benjamin Spaulding, Simon Record, and Thomas Allen. The 1886 Gazetteer of Maine notes The Buckfield and Rumford Railroad passes through the the town in a nearly north and south course, having a station at Buckfield Village. . . . . The manufactures of the town are long lumber, shingles, staves, box-boards, flour and meal, shovel-handles, hand-sleds, drag-rakes, brushes and brush blocks, powder-keags, leather, harnesses, cutting-blocks, men’s boots, etc. Buckfield Village is the principal centre, not only for this but for several adjacent towns. The picturesque, but apparently inadequate, 1881 Roundabout Bridge, over the Nezinscot River, was replaced in 1977 by the standard steel structure found throughout the state. The river is sometimes the choice for people seeking a scenic, moderately challenging canoe trip from Buckfield to Turner. The Bridge House in the village hugs the right bank, with rapids above and flat water below the nearby bridge. Buckfield village is compact, having within a few hundred yards of its center the public library, two veterans memorials, the Masonic Temple, the Odd Fellows Building, the Post Office, and a general store. A short distance away is the Community Church, the Community Center and Town Offices, and the Fire Department. Buckfield is home to Wells Wood Turning & Finishing, a firm that has supplied the White House annual Easter Egg Roll with thousands of colorful souvenir wooden eggs, one for each participating child. This apple growing community lies at the junction of the east and west branches of the Nezinscot River between Turner and South Paris on Maine Route 117.
